Deeper Experience

Putting Prague First – Strategy for Sustainable Tourism in Prague. That is the name of the new strategy, potentially changing the perception of Prague once and for all – not just as the town with Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square Astronomical Clock.

Changes in tourism

The Botanic Garden in Albertov, the new landmark of the Doubravka lookout tower, or the park in Malešice. These places are likely to make their way to bae-dekers very soon. Prague is trying to shake off  the label of a Central European destination favoured for its picturesque historic centre and cheap beer. The new strategy should accentuate the modern trends in tourism.

Changes in tourism

Chance for a change

The COVID crisis has kept the numbers of tourists very far below the number for the previous season when the Czech capital welcomed 6,800,000 visitors. This decline, however, is the perfect opportunity to change the perception of Prague as a tourist destination. The current trends in urban planning say that only satisfi ed residents can make tourists satisfi ed as well.

Chance for a change

We need to enhance the incoming tourism, attract refined clients who are interested in the place and its spirit, people who seek original and authentic local products and services and spend more money in the town.

Hana Třeštíková, the Prague Municipal Council Member responsible for culture and tourism

Prague Unknown

There are many schemes already – such as the “Prague Unknown” project which involves guided tours of forgotten corners, historic treasures and interesting architecture. Some alternative projects have already proved successful and attracted new clients – the art journeys organised by the DOX Contemporary Art Centre in Holešovice, the Cargo Gallery located on a boat, bathing and sauna at the Radotín Organic Pool Centre.

And how about you? Do you see mass tourism as a problem? Are you rather a conventional tourist or do you travel “against the current” and try to discover new places in addition to the popular sites?
