IT Guy on the Railways is Never Bored
Sit back on the train, connect to the Internet, and watch a few episodes of your favourite show on the way to Ostrava. We take it for granted, but for him, it is a matter of many sleepless nights. Leo Express IT specialist Michal Havlíček has worked for eight years to let us browse the world of zeros and ones. Most of us cannot even imagine the challenges that he faces.
Before he got on the train
Michal's previous career can be summarized as follows: a multi-year grammar school in Jindřichův Hradec - a semester at the Faculty of Nuclear and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague - attempts to teach at primary school while studying at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice - an episode at a local internet provider - nine years in IT at one of Prague's hospitals.
In Leo Express, I boarded a train that never stops.
🕹️ Michal's tasks
Michal has to be able to fix a broken printer, reset a mobile phone, persuade computers to work correctly, ensure sufficient data protection, but also understand the secret corners of data infrastructures in the trains and offices. He also collaborates with programmers and market specialists who take care of the corporate website. But his main task is to provide our passengers with excellent connectivity.Today, we have to manage ten times more at peak times. It might not be clear at the first sight, but there are usually about 150 passengers connected to the internet,” explains Michal. Leo Express is planning to upgrade from 4G to 5G to improve onboard connectivity. But the company also considers those who prefer to connect using their own data tariff. “The train is a tin box with metallized windows, which reduces the capacity to use mobile signal in it. That is why we need to design a system of mobile signal boosters,” says Michal.
